Ernie Davis Grave Site, Friday, October 10, 2008. This Was The Day The Movie "The Express", Based On A True Story Of Ernie's Life, Opened Nationwide. He Was The First African American To Receive The Heisman Trophy, Winning That In 1961. He Played High School Football For Elmira Free Academy, Also Known As EFA. Known As "The Elmira Express", Ernie Attended Syracuse University, And Wore The Number 44 For The Syracuse Orange. In 1959 He Led Syracuse To Its Only National Championship In Football With Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. Ernie Died Of Leukemia In 1963, At Age 23, And Is Buried In, Chemung County, Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, New York 14904. Davis Middle School In Elmira, Is Named In His Honor.
